Jim Pitts

Celebrating 10 years | University Police

Corporal J. Pitts joined WFUPD in 2014 and has since served as a patrol officer and corporal, currently leading the night shift B-Squad in the patrol division. With over 42 years of law enforcement experience, he previously worked with both the Scottsdale Police Department and the Winston-Salem Police Department, bringing a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our department. We are grateful for his unwavering dedication to campus safety, mentorship of fellow officers, and commitment to the community.

Matt Clifford

Celebrating 15 years | Campus Life

Matt plays an integral role in our campus community, fostering an environment of inclusivity, support, and growth. Through Matt’s leadership, countless students have been empowered to overcome challenges, pursue their goals, and thrive both academically and personally. Matt’s dedication to student wellbeing and advocacy has shaped policies, strengthened support systems, and enriched campus life for all. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor Matt’s unwavering commitment to creating a positive and transformative experience for every student.

Denisha Champion

Celebrating 15 years | Health & Wellbeing

Dr. Denisha Champion, known for her vibrant personality, began her tenure at WFU as an intern at the University Counseling Center while earning her doctorate at UNCG. She advanced through roles from staff counselor to Assistant Director of Programming and Prevention, Associate Director of Community Engagement, and finally Director in February 2023. Dr. Champion led key initiatives like the Jed Campus program, WakeWell Pre-Orientation programs, and the CNS 253 Peer Education Course. She has also been recognized as a Harriet Copher Haynes Diversity Scholar by the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors and served on their Strategic Planning Leadership Task Force.

James Byrd

Celebrating 15 years | Safety and Security

James Byrd is celebrating 15 years of dedicated service at Wake Forest University. Born and raised in Mayberry (Mt. Airy, NC), James served in the U.S. Army before earning his Master’s from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Since joining Wake Forest in 2008, he has led significant physical security enhancements, including the most comprehensive upgrades since the 1993 Gate Houses. Outside of work, James is passionate about his family, faith, woodworking, and coffee, and he remains deeply committed to the safety and wellbeing of the Wake Forest community.
